Well, this has been quite a year for me!!! To say the least!!! I found a new love, sold my house, bought another, moved in and then I got married!!! Exhausting!!! But worth it! So I guess I shouldn’t have to apologize too much for being late with the requirements for a new scrappy mystery quilt. I usually have the cutting requirements out in September but this year it just didn’t happen. Hopefully, you are all still with me and ready to get started. The clues will begin in January as usual. I’m sorry to say that I haven’t figured out why some automatically get the blog post and others do not. I will post on Facebook when there is new news.
I looked at my scrap bins and saw a few spots that were sooooo overloaded so I designed this quilt around them. This Handy Dandy Scrap Quilt is a scrap buster for sure! And these scraps have ATTITUDE! Good for confident beginners on up. It has plenty of scrapiness and yet enough free space to embellish with quilting to make you and/or your longarmer happy. It will work with any color background….light or dark. I chose a creamy beige color this time. Your colored scraps should give contrast to your background so if you choose a dark background make sure you have lighter brighter scraps. If you have a lighter background use darker, bright scraps. Remember contrast and diversity is the key! So here it goes……. the 2019 Mystery Quilt………… by yours truly……..Charlotte Hawkes:
A Handy Dandy Scrap Quilt
My EQ software says you will need approximately 4 yds. of 45″ background fabric but I think that measurement is quite generous. This quilt has a scrappy border. You may make it without a border but it needs one in my humble opinion. The inside with NO border measures 60″ x 82″….with the border measures 80″ x 97″. If you make no border you will need less background fabric.
White (can be scrappy) Fabric
40 – 2 7/8″ squares cut on one diagonal to make 80 HST (Half Square Triangles)
40 – 3 1/4″ squares cut on one diagonal
Assorted Medium to Dark Colored Fabric
192 – 1 1/2″ squares
31 – 2″ squares
169 – 2 1/2″ squares
168 – 2 7/8″ squares cut on one diagonal to make 336 HST (Half Square Triangles)
96 – 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangles
80 – 2″ x 2 1/2 rectangles
160 – 2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles
20 pairs (2 the same – 40 total) – 3 1/4″ squares cut on one diagonal
64 – 4 7/8″ squares cut on one diagonal to make 128 HST (Half Square Triangles)
4 – 15 1/2″ squares cut on both diagonals
2 – 8″ squares cut on one diagonal
If you make the border you will need to cut 8 – 5″ width of fabric strips.
The border that I have chosen uses additional 2″ squares, 2″ x 2 1/2 rectangles and 2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. You may choose to use random 2″ strips in 4″, 6″, or 8″ lengths. Amounts will vary depending on what you use. This is an excellent way to use up those scraps! Cut them or not……you decide. But the more color and diversity you have, the more Attitude your quilt will have! No Ho Hum scrappy quilts for me! I like all the color and POP that I can get! I finished the top today…….done! …….just needs quilting now! And I’m loving the way this one is turning out!!!
