SEW!!………Clue #1……Scrap-In-A-Box Mystery

I have to apologize.  The clue didn’t go out at 7 pm.  Guess there was something I should have clicked and I didn’t.  Sorry!   I’ll have to figure it out for next time.  But here’s the clue:

Part #1

Sew (2) 1 7/8″ Half Square Triangles (HST) background fabric or (2) 1 1/2″ HST’s made with the Easy Angle Tool background fabric, to one 1 1/2″ colored square.  Sew to make a right angle triangle with the square on point at the top and both background HST’s to make the base (see example below)  Trim off dog ears. Make 82.

Part #2

If using 2 7/8″ colored squares, cut them in half on the diagonal or if you are using the Easy Angle Tool, use the colored HST’s cut from 2 1/2″ strips.  Sew one triangle to the unit sewn above to make a 2 1/2″ square  (See example below).  No need to match…..make them random but pleasing.  Square up if necessary to 2 1/2″ square, trim off dog ears and press to colored side.  Complete 82.

Stay tuned.  Clue #2 will be on released Feb. 10, 7 pm EST.

I had some time today and started cutting for the quilt some more. And I realized I’d been cutting 1.5″ colored triangles with the Easy Angle ruler instead of squares! While I still have tons of cutting to do (procrastinating), I’m glad I wasn’t further into the cutting phase before I figured out my mistake. Now, at least, I know which pieces to focus on cutting out first. 🙂

Thinking I should have went “scrappier” already. But I am using my stash! Haven’t bought any fabric for this project. Want to utilize my stash more instead of accumulating more! Lol. Thanks for sharing this mystery!

I love that everything was already cut and all I had to do was find the pieces to put them together! Thanks for doing this and thanks for giving us the cutting instructions before the first clue!

      Hi Stacey T.,
The measurements are right there in the clue part 2. Your block/unit should be 2 1/2″ square.

I love this block / unit also called BRAVE WORLD block. I have made many quilts with just this unit… LOOKING forward to the rest of the clues.

Thank you, Charlotte! So convenient to have all the pieces cut out for the first step. This is a cute block 🙂

I just started doing the cutting today and am almost done. I wasn’t sure I was going to do this mystery, but I found enough background and medium neutral in my stash so I decided to dive in. I loved using my scraps and the result from last year’s mystery, so I’m glad to join in this one, too. I’m trying all blues this time.. Thanks, Charlotte, for offering this to the internet universe.

Ooh, just found your website from a link posted on a group. LOVE scrappy quilts, and just wrote directions down so I can get started. Have scraps already in sizes, just need to cut hsts. Can’t wait to get started, and signed up to follow by email so I don’t miss step 2. I looked and didn’t see anyway to print the clues. Did I miss it? Makes it so much easier.

    Off to get started!

Hi Donna, Thanks for joining the group! I guess the only way to print right now is to copy and paste. I’m pretty new at this blogging stuff and the learning curve is pretty steep. I’ll look in my “WordPress for Dummies” book that my son got me for Christmas as see if I can figure it out…LOL.
      Happy Quilting!

Thank you for giving the size the units should be. It’s helpful to be sure my units are correct. I love having everything pre-cut!
