A New Year, A New Love and A New Mystery!

Can you believe it?  2019!  Time just flies when you’re having fun!  This past year has been just a whirlwind for me. And I was having FUN!  Well, sort of……. A lot of work but still fun!  After my husband died a few years ago, I settled down to having a lot of me time.  But it wasn’t in the plan set out for my life.  In stepped a new man!  What a gem!  Way too good to be real or true!!!  And he Loves Quilts!!!  To make a long story short, love was in the air, we both sold our respective houses (we had both lived in them almost 50 years), we bought a new one together (two story, 4 bedrooms!  What were we thinking!), and we got married!  Why did I tell you all  this again? Never never think you are too old!, too wrinkled!, too fat!, whatever!  Here I am writing this on a blog! on a website! have a Facebook site!  with over 900 followers! Making a new mystery!  For the 6th time! Retired, Old and wrinkly!  Don’t ever think you couldn’t or can’t!  Who knew??!! Some things just blow your mind!  Blew My mind!!!

Well, enough of that!  Let’s get down to business!  Handy Dandy Scrap business!  Are you ready? I’m including the cutting requirements again just because.  Remember color and diversity are the key to interesting, happy, beautiful scrappy quilts with attitude!

Handy Dandy Scrap Quilt – 2019

Cutting Requirements:

My EQ software says you will need approximately 4 yds. of 45″ background fabric but I think that measurement is quite generous.  This quilt has a scrappy border.  You may make it without a border but it needs one in my humble opinion.  The inside with NO border measures 60″ x 82″….with the border measures 80″ x 97″.  If you make no border you will need less background fabric.

White (can be scrappy) Fabric (Yes you can use other colors…..pale shades will work best in my opinion)

40  –  2 7/8″ squares cut on one diagonal to make 80 HST (Half Square Triangles)

40  –  3 1/4″ squares cut on both diagonals

Assorted Medium to Dark Colored Fabric

192  –  1 1/2″ squares

31 – 2″ squares

169  –  2 1/2″ squares

168  –   2 7/8″ squares cut on one diagonal to make 336 HST (Half Square Triangles)

96  –  1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangles

80  –  2″ x 2 1/2 rectangles

160  –  2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles

20 pairs (2 the same – 40 total) –  3 1/2″ squares cut on both diagonals

Background Fabric

64  –  4 7/8″ squares cut on one diagonal to make 128 HST (Half Square Triangles)

4  –  15 1/2″ squares cut on both diagonals

2  –  8″ squares cut on one diagonal

If you make the border you will need to cut 8 – 5″ width of fabric strips.

Borders

The border that I have chosen uses additional 2″ squares, 2″ x 2 1/2 rectangles and 2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles.  You may choose to use random  2″ strips in 4″, 6″, or 8″ lengths.  Amounts will vary depending on what you use.  This is an excellent way to use up those scraps! Cut them or not……you decide.

CLUE #1

1.  Using assorted 1 1/2″ colored squares, Make 48 four patches as below.  Press and trim to 2 1/2″ if necessary.

2. Sew 2 – 2 7/8″ assorted colored Half Square Triangle (HST) to two side of the four patch as shown below to make a triangle.  Press to the four patch. Trim dog ears.

3.  Sew 1 – 4 7/8″ background HST to the above triangle to make a 4 1/2″ square.  Press to the four patch side and trim to size.

4.  Sew 2 assorted colored 2 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ sections together to make a 2 1/2″ square. Make 48.  Add and sew one assorted colored 2 1/2″ square in the position shown.  It is best to mix these colors up as much as possible.
